Five moves, in order.
Most outdoor projects go sideways because the sequence is wrong, the grill gets picked before anyone maps the smoke path. This is the sequence we use on every Hamilton County build.

Start with the life, not the layout.
Morning coffee alone. Friday nights with twelve people. Kids on the grass. Write the scenes first, the layout follows.

Read the site.
Sun angles by hour, prevailing wind, slope, drainage, and the sightlines from every window inside the house. The yard already told you where the patio wants to be.

Build the zones.
Cook, gather, fire, quiet. Each one gets a footprint, a floor, and a boundary. The paths between them are as important as the zones themselves.

Choose materials that age well.
In Indiana that means freeze-thaw-rated pavers or natural stone, composite or hardwood decking, mortar-set masonry on high-traffic surfaces, and stainless fasteners near fire and water.

Layer light and shelter.
A covered structure buys you spring and fall. Low-voltage lighting on dimmers turns the yard into a room after dark. Skip these and the space gets used four months a year.

Draw it, permit it, price it, before you build it.
Every zone dimensioned, every material specified, every footing engineered, every permit pulled. That is the Master Plan. Then construction is execution, not discovery.
