1. The classic entertainer's rectangle
A 20×24 rectangular paver patio in a running-bond pattern, sized for a dining table on one end and a lounge grouping on the other. It is the most-requested and most-forgiving layout we build. Belgard Mega-Arbel or Unilock Beacon Hill Flagstone in a warm limestone tone plays well with both traditional and transitional homes across Carmel, Fishers, and Westfield.
2. Multi-zone patio with a seat wall divider
One patio that reads as two rooms. A seat wall, usually 18 inches tall, capped in bluestone or thermal-finish limestone, splits the space into a dining zone and a fire-feature zone, without cutting the view. The wall doubles as overflow seating for parties.
3. Curved paver patio with planted borders
A softer footprint that follows the curve of the yard rather than fighting it. Curved patios cost 15–20% more than straight-edged patios because every border cut is custom, but they photograph beautifully and integrate naturally with mature landscaping, which matters in older Meridian-Kessler and Broad Ripple lots.
4. Paver-and-natural-stone hybrid
A paver field with an inset of full-thickness natural stone, usually a bluestone or Indiana limestone medallion, under the dining table or around the fire feature. It is the detail that makes a paver patio read as custom rather than catalog, and a modest upcharge on the base patio depending on the stone.
5. Tumbled-paver classic (weathered look)
Tumbled pavers have softened edges and slight color variation, which reads more European villa than suburban builder. Unilock Courtstone and Belgard Old World Paver are the two we specify most. They pair especially well with brick and stone Indianapolis homes from the 1920s–1940s.
6. Large-format modern paver patio
24-inch or 36-inch modular pavers in a linear or ashlar pattern, usually in a cool gray or charcoal. Clean, modern, and increasingly requested for new-construction homes in West Clay, Bridgewater, and the Village of WestClay. Large-format pavers have less joint-line, which reads more like a poured slab but ages better.
7. Paver patio with integrated fire pit
The single most-used feature on any Indianapolis patio. A gas fire pit set flush into the patio field, no raised curb, with a 6-foot clear seating circle around it, and a gas line run underground from the house. Wood-burning is fine but gas is what actually gets lit on a random Wednesday in October.
8. Paver patio under a pergola or pavilion
The single biggest usage upgrade in Indiana. A cedar pergola or louvered aluminum structure over a 16×20 paver patio takes the space from 'nice in June' to 'used March through November.' Pair with landscape lighting and it becomes a real four-season room.
9. Elevated paver patio (raised over a walkout)
For homes with walkout basements, common in Zionsville, Geist, and older Fishers neighborhoods, an elevated paver patio built on a reinforced deck substructure creates upper-level outdoor living without a wood deck. More expensive and more engineered, but the finished result reads as a stone terrace, not a deck.
What makes an Indianapolis paver patio last 30 years
Three things, in order of importance:
- Base depth. 6–8 inches of compacted, graded aggregate for a residential patio; more for driveways. Skimp here and Indianapolis freeze-thaw will heave the patio within five years.
- Drainage. A slight, deliberate slope, usually 1/8 inch per foot, away from the house, plus edge drainage tied into the yard grade. Water is the only real enemy.
- Edge restraint. Aluminum or hidden concrete edge, spiked every 12 inches. Cheap plastic edging is why patios spread and joints open.
Ask any Indianapolis paver patio contractor what their base spec is and what warranty they carry on it. If the answer is vague, keep looking. A real installer will tell you the aggregate depth, the compaction method, and the exact edge-restraint product.
